Rulers of the Sky:

Pteranodon:

Picture
Pteranodon was a large, graceful pterosaur that was designed to live in the air and near water during the Creataceous Period.  Its vast wings and light frame meant that it could use thermals (rising air currents) to soar effortlessly for hours.  However, on land, it was ungainly and awkward, thus putting it at risk with other predators.  For this reason, it probably only landed for mating, nesting, and/or resting.  Although this pterosaur had a wing-span of 30 feet, its total body was around 44 pounds.  The total length of its body and head was around 10 feet.  Fish was its main diet; therefore, it would have spent more time flying over the shallow, coastal areas rather than land.
